Mike StartupI have trained with Shihan (Master) Martin Day for over ten years now and I am so grateful that he set me on a life style which, until then, I would never have thought possible for a fat 50 year old to do.

Up to that point, I had only seen his training routines and exercises as something for younger, much younger, fit people – certainly not a veteran couch potato like me. But with his encouragement and expertise I found that not only was it possible but it worked brilliantly well, and, 10 years on, I believe that I am now far fitter, functionally stronger and more flexible than I ever would have been if I had missed that opportunity.

Always leading by example – as can be seen on his DVDs – Martin Day has never just accepted that any given flexibility or dynamic stretching exercise will be both effective and safe. So his combination of well-researched techniques which are shown in his book Fighting Fit, along with goals, inspiration and encouragement, is a coaching style many already envy. Never was there even a suggestion of his system being “too much for someone of your age.”

This was emphasised by the Osteopath I was seeing for a pre-existing back problem (traffic accident) and who had expressed concern about my very tight hamstrings. Derek Alder"I first met Martin Day (Shihan) at the beginning of the year 2000. I attended his karate class, a first free lesson, as I had become disillusioned with the keep fit sessions I had been taking part in during the previous year. He has been my tutor, my mentor and my friend ever since. During my youth I was a very active person and loved football. I played this sport 3 times during a weekend and consequently I was very fit as I did the training sessions too. However, after marriage, the purchase of a new home and my daughter coming along I was unable to keep this up and eventually became, as my doctor called me, sedentary.

This was awful, as I felt unhealthy and unfit as well as being called these things. I just had to do something about it. I was 49 years old so what could I do? I joined a gym to get myself fit as that seemed to be the way forward and everyone was doing it. This was hopeless as I did not really see much improvement in my health or fitness and it was also very boring. So when I saw Martin Day’s advertisement for karate lessons in the same leisure centre, I jumped at the chance. I had studied karate in my late teens, Wado Ryu, and progressed to level 5th Kyu so I knew that this would keep me fit, even though I had been a bit disillusioned with karate itself.

Well, seven years on and I am still attending his lessons. They are still enjoyable and every session I feel that much stronger, fitter and more supple. It has all really quite amazed me as I can still do athletic things with my body and not just in my mind as most people my age do. In fact I have never felt fitter, more flexible or more confident in myself since my teen years.

Apart from the experience of training with Martin, itself an experience in a lifetime that all should aim for, his book Fighting Fit and accompanying DVDs are amazing. Easy to understand techniques, which are clearly presented, will enable you too to experience what I have achieved: endless stamina, strength, flexibility, confidence and better overall health.

David RoweI first started training in Karate in the UK many years ago when I was about 11 years old and soon got fed up of the boring way I was being taught, “you know the one, all students in a line and do punches & blocks for an hour until you can't feel your arms”, so after about 8 months I was pretty disheartened & gave it up to play soccer.

I’m now living in Perth WA & I am now 45 years young & finished with soccer because of so many injuries so I thought why not give Karate a go again! I was, unnecessarily, afraid of the dangers of walking the streets alone, due to the mistake of reading a reasonably awful newspaper report. This was mainly the reason I started karate but after a few months it became more than that. As I mentioned my confidence grew greatly but so did my physical abilities such as stamina and flexibility.
